A four-state Listeria outbreak linked to deli meat has ended with 12 hospitalized and 1 dead, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The illnesses were reported from Florida (1), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (7), and New York (3) among patients ranging in age from 40 to 89 years old. All of them were hospitalized. The fatality occurred in Florida.

The illnesses occurred between August 6, 2020 and October 30, 2020. The CDC worked with state agencies and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) on an investigation of the outbreak. They used whole genome sequencing to examine the “fingerprints” of Listeria serovars uploaded to a national database to identify people who were part of this outbreak. Then they interviewed 11 of the people about foods they had eaten before they became ill. All of them reported eating Italian-style deli meat, such as salami, mortadella, and prosciutto in the month before they became ill.
The deli meats were purchased from various grocery stores. USDA-FSIS and state officials reviewed records from these stores to try and find a common supplier of deli meats. They also tested several products. USDA-FSIS was unable to identify a common supplier or a specific type of deli meat as the source of this outbreak.
